What the novel is about...
First of all, let me explain that I got this novel from NetGalley and I requested it without knowing that this is the last book of The Scandalous Women of the Ton series. Since I haven't read any of the previous book, I want to tell the story based on what I got after reading this book only.
Margery Mallon, the maid, had never expected that she would be the long lost heiress of Templemore, the richest family in England. When she was a child, her mother was killed and she was abducted. Now, she stayed with her adoptive family and working at Lady Grant's house. Henry Wardeaux, the former heir of Templemore, was a very determined gentleman and he had decided that he would help Margery to adapt with her new life. But the chemistry soon became too strong to resist for him and Margery. At first, Margery and Henry always fought but in the end, they couldn't refused that they had fallen in love with each other. However, Henry didn't think it was appropriate for him to marry Margery as people would see him as a golddigger.
After Margery's arrival on the Templemore castle, many weird accidents started to happen to Margery. Were these accidents related to Margery's past? Did someone try to get rid of Margery one more time?
What I thought about this novel...
Finally, I can read any other historical romance novels besides Julia Quinn's that I really enjoy. Nicola Cornick really has a great writing skill and I love reading every part of this book. This book, of course, has so many hot scenes, but besides that, it also has a big mystery to be solved. Who killed Margery's mom? Was that her dad? or any other person? And what was this person wants now after Margery came back? Is he/she trying to kill Margery or just threatening her? This is the question the readers will have during reading this book and only be answered on the last part of the book. I love reading historical romance books that really have more serious conflict rather than only questioning whether the hero loves the heroine or not.
About the characters, I love both Margery and Henry. They are both very stubborn but also lovable. This book is full of their funny argumentations and fights. So entertaining. This book also has so many characters from the other previous books, and that actually makes me a little confused to understand their characteristics, but that doesn't reduce my enjoyment during reading this book.
However, I find some love scenes were not appropriately placed. There were some scenes that I found impossible to make if you're in the real life and having such condition (not that I have tried any). I don't know how many love scenes the historical romance book must have but I think it's just too much in this book. But I do like the last love scene. That was very romantic.
Overall, Forbidden is such a good book and I hope the whole series will be translated to Indonesian so that I can read all of them. Thanks to Harlequin for providing me this galley.
Recommended for historical romance lovers.
